🔮 Weekly Dose of AI #2 - Reading minds / Breaking banks /ChatGPT API
Good morning,
AI is exploding. So for now Definite Optimism digest is focussed on what’s going on in AI and the impact it is having on the world.
Let’s get to it 🚀
👀 Things to Know
1️⃣ Researchers reconstruct brain images from MRI scans
Ok, this is scary. Researchers were able to reconstruct brain images using data from fMRI scans combined with Stable Diffusion. Whilst this hasn’t yet been peer reviewed, if this technology continues to improve it would have major privacy implications - I mean it would be pretty close to mind reading!
2️⃣ How I Broke Into a Bank Account With an AI-Generated Voice
Making people say things they didn’t say using AI is all the rage - and can be entertaining as for example with AI Presidents Gaming which is as fun as it sounds.
However, researchers have also now used the same technology to impersonate someone to bypass bank security. Being able to tell what is authentic and what is fake is only going to get harder as this tech gets better. We desperately need better tools to detect AI generated content.
3️⃣ OpenAI Introduces ChatGPT and Whisper APIs
OpenAI is a leader in the generative AI space. This week, they released a new API for ChatGPT, which will likely accelerate the AI gold rush.
At the same time, OpenAI has started to come under greater scrutiny because, despite the name, it’s not actually very open. From the beginning when it promised to be open source and non-profit, it is now a closed source, profit driven company valued at around $29B. An interesting switcheroo that has upset some people.
This is concerning, given that OpenAI has just released it’s plan for AGI and beyond!
